Abstract:Objective To explore the effectiveness of out-of-hospital disease management using mobile health app in patients with stable phase schizophrenia. Methods Fifty outpatients with schizophrenia were randomized to either a control group of 25, receiving routine follow-ups, or an intervention group of 25, receiving mHealth app-based out-of-hospital disease management. The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, the Medication Adherence Rating Scale-10, and the Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale were employed to collect data pre-intervention, immediately post-intervention, 3 months and 6 months post-intervention.Results Twenty patients in each group completed the study. The group, time, and group by time interaction effects on psychiatric symptom scores across the four time points were statistically significant (all P<0.05). The group effect on medication adherence was significant (P<0.05). The time and interaction effects on quality of life were also significant (all P<0.05).Conclusion Out-of-hospital disease management using mHealth app ameliorates psychiatric symptoms, and enhances medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia.
