Abstract:Objective To conduct an in-depth exploration of the status of affiliate stigma among parents of adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), providing a reference for improving parents′ mental health. Methods An interpretative phenomenological research approach was adopted.Eighteen parents of adolescents with NSSI were recruited for semi-structured interviews between October and December 2024.Interview data were analyzed using Colaizzi′s 7-step method. Results Three main themes and ten sub-themes were identified:initial cognitive dissonance (lack of understanding, shock, guilt and self-blame), manifestations of affiliate stigma (learned helplessness, emotional exhaustion, hypervigilance, internalized shame), negative coping with affiliate stigma (passive acceptance, concealment and secrecy, social withdrawal). Conclusion Parents of adolescents with NSSI experience complex affiliate stigma.Healthcare professionals need to help parents improve their cognitive level, psychological resilience, and positive coping abilities. There is also a need to call on society to acknowledge adolescent NSSI behavior seriously. These measures can help alleviate parents′ affiliate stigma, enable them to cope positively with stigmatization, and thereby provide better family support for the psychological rehabilitation of adolescents with NSSI.
