Abstract:Objective To understand the willingness of elderly individuals in rural areas of southern Xinjiang to engage in age-adapted home environment renovation and the influencing factors, providing a reference for promoting such renovations in rural settings. Methods A convenience sampling method was employed to select 233 rural elderly participants. An in-home survey was conducted using a general information questionnaire, the Activities of Daily Living Scale, and the Home Environment Safety Assessment Scale to explore and analyze the factors influencing the willingness of elderly individuals in southern Xinjiang to renovate their home environments. Results The findings revealed that 52.79% of elderly individuals in southern Xinjiang were willing to undertake age-adapted home environment renovations.Regression analysis indicated that elderly individuals with a total household income of ≥5 000 yuan per month and those who had a caregiver exhibited higher willingness to engage in renovations.Conversely, those with higher home environment safety ratings, a limited understanding of the benefits of age-adapted renovations, and those completely unfamiliar with the concept demonstrated lower willingness (all P<0.05).Conclusion The willingness of rural elderly individuals to engage in age-adapted renovations is influenced by multiple factors. It is essential for the government and relevant age-adaptation departments to focus on low-income elderly individuals, those without a caregiver, and those living in unsafe home environments when developing renovation implementation plans.Additionally, efforts should be made to enhance awareness among elderly individuals in southern Xinjiang regarding the importance of age-adapted home environment renovations.
