Objective To translate the German-language version of Partner′s Salmon′s Item List (Partner′s SIL) into simplified Chinese, to test its reliability and validity, and to provide a tool for assessing birth experience of the mother and her partner from a dyadic perspective. Methods Following the Brislin′s translation model, translation, back-translation, expert consultation, and pilot survey were performed to generate the Chinese version of Partner′s SIL. A convenience sample of 316 fathers who attended the birth of their child were surveyed to test the reliability and validity. Results The Chinese version of Partner′s SIL consists of three dimensions and 16 items:physical and mental adaption, fulfilment, and emotional distress. The item-level content validity index (I-CVI) ranged from 0.800 to 1.000, and the scale-level CVI (S-CVI) was 0.988. Exploratory factor analysis yielded three factors that accounted for 67.355% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good fit of the model to the data (χ2/df=1.261, RMSEA =0.036, CFI=0.932, NFI=0.917, and TLI=0.978). The overall Cronbach′s alpha coefficient was 0.753. Conclusion The Chinese version of Partner′s SIL demonstrates good reliability and validity, which can be used to assess paternal birth experience in China.
