Objective To investigate the impact of toxic leadership behaviors of nurse managers on nurses′ work engagement, and to provide reference for enhancing nurses′ work engagement.Methods A convenience sample of 1,310 nurses were selected from 29 secondary and tertiary public hospitals in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and they were invited to complete the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale and the Toxic Leadership Behaviors of Nurse Managers Scale.Results The total score of nurses′ work engagement was (59.07±10.03), and the total score of toxic leadership behaviors of nurse managers was (70.32±16.61).Hierarchical regression analysis showed that toxic leadership behaviors of nurse managers affected nurses′ work engagement after controlling for demographic variables, which explained 32.2% of the total variance.Conclusion Toxic leadership behaviors of nurse managers ne-gatively affect nurses′ work engagement. Nurse managers should avoid toxic leadership behaviors to improve nurses′ work engagement.
