Abstract:Objective To develop a comprehensive home-based pulmonary rehabilitation protocol for older patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and to improve rehabilitation efficacy. Methods Sixty older patients with stable COPD were randomly divided into a control group and an intervention group, with 30 in each group, receiving either routine care or evidence-based comprehensive home-based pulmonary rehabilitation for 6 months. The effect was evaluated using the St. George′s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), 6-minute walk test (6 MWT), and the modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) scale dyspnea score. Results The intervention group had significantly lower dyspnea score and SGRQ score, whereas significantly longer 6-minute walk distance after 3 and 6 months of intervention compared with the control group (all P<0.05).Conclusion Comprehensive home-based pulmonary rehabilitation can ameliorate dyspnea in older patients with stable COPD, enhance their ability to perform physical activity, and improve quality of life.
