Abstract:Objective To explore the real feeling and experience of medical student volunteers participated in hospice care for terminal cancer patients, and to provide a reference for the training program for medical student volunteers. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted among 10 medical student volunteers participated in hospice care, and the interview data was analyzed with Colaizzi′s 7-step method. Results A total of 4 themes were extracted:agreement to hospice care, positive experience, negative experience, lack of hospice care skills. Conclusion Agreement to hospice care and positive experience of medical student volunteers should be made full use of to stimulate their enthusiasm for voluntary service. According to their negative experience and lack of related skills, hospice care organization should improve the management of volunteers, and strengthen death education, communication skills and spiritual care training to enhance their hospice-care competence.
