Abstract:Objective To understand the attitudes of nurses in general hospitals towards patient suicide and explore and the influencing factors. Methods Convenience sampling was adopted to survey 980 nurses in 10 general hospitals in Hubei province with a questionnaire named Survey of Attitude of Nursing Staff toward Suicidal Patients. Results The overall attitude of 112(11.4%) nurses towards patient suicide was "understandable" or "tolerable", 864(88.2%) were "neutral" or "contradictory", and 4(0.4%) were "opposed" or "repulsive".The hospital level, access to knowledge about suicide prevention through media network, personal monthly income, and whether or not having experience patient suicide had significant effects on nurses′ attitude toward patient suicide. Conclusion General hospital nurses are generally neutral or contradictory towards patient suicide.It is necessary to strengthen inpatient suicide prevention training for nursing staff, guide nurses to establish rational life values and attitudes towards suicide, and effectively perform the role of "gatekeeper" in maintaining the safety of patients′ lives to prevent inpatient suicide.
