Abstract:Objective To formulate indicators for standardizing medication checking procedures, and to standardize nurses′ checking behavior prior to administration and ensure medication safety. Methods Two hundred nurses working in 7 nursing units were included in this study. We identified problems in checking process prior to medication administration, then developed indicators and checklist to standardize the checking procedures, provided multi-modal and multi-channel training for nurses, and implemented continuous quality improvement based on the indicators. Results We performed 4,200 inspections in 200 nurses′ medication administration process before and after the intervention, respectively. The rate of standardized checking was increased from 90.67% to 95.31%, showing significant difference (P<0.05).No medication error occurred before and after the intervention. Conclusion Development and application of indicators to standardize checking procedures in medication administration can standardize nurses′ checking behavior and guarantee medication safety.
