Objective To promote holistic recovery of the elderly after orthopedic surgery at a combined medical treatment and elderly care facility. Methods A multidisciplinary integrated care team was established and provided an integrated care and rehabilitation exercise program based on the theory of happiness science for 43 elderly patients after orthopedic surgery. The effect was evaluated after 6 months of intervention. Results After the intervention, the Barthel Index scores and the Spirituality Index of Well-Being scale scores of the elderly were significantly enhanced, whereas pain intensity was significantly ameliorated (P<0.01 for all).The qualitative evaluation indicated high professionalism and high-quality service, but insufficient nursing staff. Conclusion Implementation of multi-disciplinary integrated care and rehabilitation exercise for the elderly after orthopedic surgery is conducive to promoting their physical and mental recovery.
