Abstract:Objective To explore the influence of establishing a sunshine bookstore on psychological mood of children with cancer and the caregiver burden of parents, and to improve the experience of children during hospitalization. Methods A wish list was used to collect the wishes of hospitalized children with cancer, and a sunshine bookstore was established by the researchers. Later, a management system for the bookstore was created and volunteers were recruited. Then the researchers carried out a series of activities at the bookstore, including playing multimedia materials,hosting painting workshops, volunteer-assisted reading, and group-based psychological therapy, etc. Before and at completion of an array of activities, 31 children were measured with the Children′s Depression Inventory and the Social Anxiety Scale for Children, and their parents with the Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview. Results At completion of the activities, the social anxiety scores, and depression scores of the children, and the caregiver burden scores of parents were significantly lower than before the activities (P<0.05,P<0.01). Conclusion Establishment of the sunshine bookstore and the launch of a series of accompanying activities lessened anxiety and fear of children during hospitalization, and reduced the caregiver burden of parents.
