Application of Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) in communication about readiness for discharge with post-operative colorectal cancer patients
Objective To explore the effect of applying Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) in communication about readiness for discharge with colorectal cancer patients receiving laparoscopic surgery. Methods A total of 48 colorectal cancer patients admitted from March to June 2019 for laparoscopic surgery were assigned into the control group and given routine discharge preparation service. Another 49 colorectal cancer patients admitted from July to October 2019, were assigned into the intervention group and received discharge preparation service guided by TeamSTEPPS. Results There were significant differences in scores of the Patient Views on Nursing Care with the implementation of bedside report (PVNC-BR) between the two groups; the before-after scores of the Nurse-Physician Collaboration Scale (NPCS) rated by the medical staff also had significant differences (P<0.05,P<0.01). Conclusion The discharge preparation service based on TeamSTEPPS could promote communication efficiency of the discharge planning team, and improve satisfaction of colorectal cancer patients receiving laparoscopic surgery.
