Abstract:Objective To elucidate the patterns of change in patient volume and waiting time within the emergency infusion ward, so as to provide recommendations to enhance the quality of care and alleviate crowding in the emergency department. Methods All patients who were admitted to the emergency infusion ward of Peking University People′s Hospital from January 2021 to December 2021 were included. We collected data on their basic demographic characteristics, triage grade, visited department, and infusion waiting time. Results A total of 43,413 patients were enrolled in this study. The infusion waiting time for patients was 68.00(2.00,171.00) min. Regarding the temporal distribution, patient volume and waiting time for infusion were significantly higher during the daytime compared to the nighttime. Patient volume and waiting time for infusion were higher on Monday, Saturday and Sunday compared to other days. Additionally, patient volume and waiting time for infusion peaked in December, January, and February (winter). Conclusion The patient volume and waiting time within the emergency infusion ward exhibit specific peak and trough periods based on visiting times (day, week and month). Human resources should be adjusted according to the changing patterns,so as to improve nursing quality.
