Abstract:Objective To explore the psychological experience and coping strategies on financial toxicity among patients with esophageal cancer, so as to provide a reference for deeply understanding the intension of financial toxicity and taking targeted coping stra-tegies. Methods A phenomenological method was utilized, and 25 patients with esophageal cancer were selected using purposive sampling to conduct semi-structured in-depth interviews.The Giorgi phenomenal analysis method was used to analyze the interview data and extract themes. Results Three themes on esophageal cancer patients′ experience of financial toxicity were extracted:taking direct and indirect financial burden, phycological pressure, worrying about the future and uncertainty, serious impact of financial burden on daily life.Four themes on their coping strategies:reducing unnecessary treatment costs, reducing daily living expenses, seeking limited financial assistance, selecting and decision on job. Conclusion Patients with esophageal cancer face problems on financial toxicity, leading to various impact on their physical and mental health, and they take some strategies to cope with financial toxicity. It is suggested that government and administrators pay more attention to patients′ financial toxicity, and adopt multi-approach intervention to help them reduce the problem of financial toxicity.
