Abstract:Objective To illuminate the experience of benefit finding in AIDS patients and to provide reference for targeted intervention. Methods Using qualitative research approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 AIDS patients. Results Four prominent themes emerged:personal growth (self-adjustment, understanding and self-enhancement), perceived support (intimate relationship and family support, medical staff support, national policy and social support), establishment of positive health behaviours (correcting unhealthy lifestyles, active help-seeking, reducing sexual risk behaviours and regular follow-up, information sharing and mutual encouragement), and lack of benefit. Conclusion Medical staff should focus on the positive experiences of AIDS patients during the disease process, assess their mental state, support and coping ability, and provide effective help to facilitate benefit finding.
