Abstract:Objective To explore the reasons of the oldest-old who chose to live alone in the communities, so as to enrich the theoretical concept of aging in place. Methods A descriptive qualitative research design was chosen, and 13 community-dwelling oldest-old living alone were recruited from communities to participate in semi-structured interviews.A conventional content analysis was used to analyze data. Results Three themes and seven subthemes were extracted, including retaining freedom (dietary practicing freedom, conducting lifestyle freedom, performing hobby freedom), keeping harmonious relationships (lowering the risk of being loathed, avoiding economic conflicts), and maintaining a sense of connection (old friends with similar age, preferred environment). Conclusion The oldest-old who live alone chose to live in the communities are influenced by multiple factors.Nurses should provide effective help on the basis of their real needs and problems, so as to meet their needs of safety aging.
