Abstract:Objective To understand the health problems of mothers and infants during puerperium by running an in-home breastfeeding and puerperal care support program, to summarize the experience of in-home visits, and to provide basis for improving health management during puerperium. Methods The hospital guidance team provided training and one-to-one guidance to 4 members of the community in-home guidance team, who then paid in-home visits to 102 mothers with breastfeeding problems, services including breastfeeding and puerperal care support. Results A total of 118 in-home visits were done. The most commonly seen maternal problem lay in breastfeeding posture (73.7%), and the most commonly seen infantile problem was feeding associated (65.2%). Mothers′ satisfaction with in-home visits reached 100%. There were no accidents and no complaints. Conclusion In-home breastfeeding and puerperal care support by in- and out-of-hospital teams could help mothers solve the problems encountered in breastfeeding and improve their satisfaction. Before implementation, the visiting team and corresponding guidance team should be established to strengthen the control over quality of in-home guidance, improve the in- and out-of-hospital linkage, and provide one-to-one guidance to the in-home visitors, in an effort to improve service quality.
