Objective To understand the practice of decisionmaking among neonatal PICC specialty nurses, and to provide reference for setting up nursing intervention to enhance neonatal PICC specialty nurses′ decisionmaking level. Methods Semistructured interviews were conducted among 12 neonatal PICC specialty nurses, and data were analyzed using thematic analysis method. Results Two themes were extracted on nurses′ perception of clinical nursing decisionmaking: perceived the importance of decisionmaking and unclear of the exact definition and process of decisionmaking. Five themes were extracted regarding their experience of clinical decisionmaking: multiple role conflicts had negative effects on decisionmaking, individual differences in decisionmaking, desire for convenient specialized support and cooperation, ambivalence of challenging difficult decisionmaking and fear of consequences, postdecisionmaking experience summary and selfreflection. Conclusion Neonatal PICC specialty nurses′ perception on clinical decision making is insufficient, and positive and negative experience coexisted. Nursing educators and administrators should do something to improve specialty nurses′ perception and emphasis on clinical nursing decisionmaking, so as to reduce their decisionmaking stress, and raise decisionmaking efficiency via establishing regional interactive platform.
