Abstract:Objective To translate the Disaster Adaptation and Resilience Scale (DARS), and to test its reliability and validity among community citizens exposed to disaster. Methods A Chinese version DARS was formed after translation, back translation, cross-cultural adaption and pilot test, then it was used to investigate 901 adult citizens from 4 communities in central Guangzhou to test its reliability and validity. Results Its average scale-level content validity index was 0.975, and the item-level content validity indexes were 0.875-1.000. A total of 6 public factors were extracted via exploratory factor analysis, the cumulative variance contribution of which was 73.492%; and the validation factor analysis showed that, χ2/df=3.143, RMSEA=0.066, IFI=0.920, CFI=0.919, TLI=0.914. The final Chinese version DARS consisted of 45 items in 5 dimensions:material resources, social resources, problem-solving skills, stress regulation, optimism. The Cronbach′s alpha coefficient for the total scale was 0.978, and the Cronbach′s alpha coefficients for the five dimensions were 0.919-0.955,its split-half reliability was 0.878. Conclusion The translation of the DARS combines with Chinese culture and social background, so it has good reliability and validity, and it can be used as an effective tool to assess disaster adaptation and resilience of Chinese disaster-exposed persons.
