Abstract:Objective To investigate chemotherapy and radiotherapy induced symptoms among lung cancer patients and to describe their self-care practices on alleviating the symptoms. Methods Totally, 302 lung cancer patients were investigated using Therapy-related Symptoms Checklist (TRSC) and Symptom Alleviation: Self-care Methods tool (SA:SCM). Results The top five self-reported symptoms were fatigue(94.70%), loss appetite(91.39%), nausea(78.48%), hair loss(74.17%) and vomiting(69.21%); the lung cancer patients also experienced other 29 symptoms besides the 25 symptoms in TRSC. More than 400 symptom alleviation self-care methods were collected, which were classified into 6 aspects includingdiet/nutrition/lifestyle change, mood/body control, biological treatment, herbal treatment, prescribed medicine and others. Conclusion Lung cancer patients encounter serious therapy-related symptoms, and some self-care methods could alleviate the symptoms. Nurses should collect complementary and alternative methods for symptom alleviation based on evidence, so as to manage symptoms effectively, and reduce patients′ symptom distress.
